Sawai Madhopur Rajasthan

Sawai Madhopur - a city and a municipality in District Sawai Madhopur in Rajasthan State. Gateway to the world renowned Ranthambhore National Park - one of the two national parks of the State under Project Tiger. Sawai Madhopur - built as a planned city by Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh - I of Jaipur (1750 - 1768) and named the township after his own name.

Ranthambhor Fort: 

The fortress of Ranthambhore, founded in 994 AD by the Chauhan Rajputs. This imposing fort is perched atop a hill at an altitude of over 200 metres admist dense forest. After the defeat of Prithviraj III, the Chauhan king, by Muhammad of Ghor in 1192, Ranthambhore, led by Govinda Raja, grandson of Prithviraj, became the center of Chauhan resistance to the expanding Sultanate of Delhi. Govinda Raja was succeeded by his son Balhana.

Wildlife: 

Ranthambhor National Park: 

This wildlife reserve figures amongst the notable national parks in India. Tiger and other wildlife viewing opportunities are in abundance here. Ranthambhore National Park is a favorite for the tourists with special interest in wildlife because of its extensive flora and fauna. The sprawling dry deciduous forest of Dhok in Ranthambhore is well known for tigers and an encounter with this predator is not rare here. Sambar, cheetal, nilgai, wild boar, chinkara and langur are prominent prey species of tiger. Also, the peafowl forms a major menu item of this big cat. Placid water of three lakes - Padam Talab, Rajbagh and Milak Talab - in the park beckon large numbers of migratory and local birds.
